11906734_1068313856520403_5616191905326881477_oI’m so excited to share with you the first of my Behind the Lens Series featuring Laura Vela of Laura Elise Loveography. I was inspired by these series because of her. As a new photographer, it’s been quite a journey learning the different aspects of photography and starting a business is an even bigger learning curve. I was so thankful when Laura reached out to me on Facebook and offered her help and guidance.
It’s rare you find people who are kind, and  who go out of their way to help a complete stranger. She really intrigued me, and her photography was inspiring. I loved her style, and I could see her passion through her work. It’s funny most people pick their photographer based on their work, but never really know the photographer behind the lens. I think it’s important to see who your photographer is and what motivates them and makes them so passionate about what they do. So check out my interview below, and meet Laura Vela an amazing lifestyle photographer and mama to two beautiful children.

How did you get started in photography?
I have been photographing for along time! I remember being young and always having a camera in my hand. I started with film and worked my way up to digital. The love of photography came from my aunt Mona when she gave me my first professional film camera.
Describe your style.
I would describe my style as clean , warm and full of life and color. I try to really get to know my clients on a personal level so I learn their likes and dislikes. I shoot from my heart and I can truly say that I love my clients!
What kind of camera do you use?
I have a Canon Mark III I have had a Rebel T3i and a Mark II. I Love Canon!
If you had to choose your top 3 favorite lenses, what would they be and why?
I am in love with my 24-70 mm 1.8L Its my go to lens I love that I can get up close and personal with my clients and also give them the space just to be a family.
50mm 1.4 Love this lens I don’t use it alot but when I do its always been great!
135mm 1.2L This lens is an amazing lens I have used it for Bridals the boca on this lens is amazing and creamy and the subject is super sharp!
What do you love most about being a photographer?
I love the connection I get to have with my families from births to newborns, smash cake sessions or a senior. The emotional connection is strong and I love being able to capture that moment of love or excitement in their body language and smiles.
What has been your greatest challenge in photography?
I think my biggest challenge has been pricing, I try to keep my prices low enough because I think everyone should be able to afford a good photographer but at the same time I have a business to run taxes to pay and other bills that all go into being a photographer. So its been hard trying to find my “price”
What is your favorite type of photography to shoot and why?
I LOVE birth photography I love being able to document it all from the contractions and the pain to the tears of happiness. There is just something so magical about watching a woman give birth its amazing!
Where is your favorite place to shoot?
I would have to say my favorite place has been Beach Town in Galveston the sand, the water the white bridge. Its so beautiful and peaceful out there its almost like a small get away from the busy lives we all live. I feel that my clients can really relax and be themselves out there!
What type of editing software do you prefer?
I mainly edit in Photoshop its has really taken along time to get it down and I know I still have alot of learning to do with photoshop but I love it.
What is one advice you would give to aspiring photographers?
Practice, learn and find great mentors. I have had alot of GREAT mentors in my life some where photographers some where moms and some where both. They have helped with all sides of business, clients, and all of the above. I also would say enjoy every moment the moments we capture for our clients will be on their walls in their offices and in their hearts forever.
I hope you enjoyed this interview and learned a thing or two about photography. And if you love her work and would like to contact her please check out her contact information below.
