This week’s Behind the Lens Series I had the pleasure of interviewing one of Houston’s top wedding photographer and one of my childhood friends Jessica Pledger. We actually grew up a couple of streets from each other. She was an avid softball player as a young child, and eventually went on to get a scholarship to Harvard University to play softball there. After graduating with an economics degree, she came back to Houston, studies photography at Rice, and started her photography business in 2010. She is currently married to her high school sweetheart and residing in the Houston area. Check out her interview below. She is definitely one of my inspirations in Wedding photography.
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am a Houston Wedding Photographer, who focuses on taking romantic, documentary wedding photos. I have been in business for 5 years and have photographed over 100 weddings. I live in the Bay Area, south of Houston with my husband. I am a nerd; I love to learn. I am always trying to read and learn new things. I love cooking, and animals, and recently gardening.
How did you get started in photography?
I have always loved photography. My grandpa bought me a digital camera when they first came out and I was about 10 years old, and I loved it. I just thought of it as a hobby, but after I graduate from college I thought I would give this hobby I love a shot as a career, and I saw a ton of growth from the very first year in business.
Describe your style.
The goal for my work is the document the uniqueness of a wedding day in the most beautiful way possible. The most important aspect of the wedding is the people and the moments that happen between people, but I also try to capture the style of the wedding in all the decisions made in the décor for the ceremony, reception, and what all the Wedding Party wears. I want my photos to have a timeless, romantic feel to them.
What kind of camera do you use? Brand preference?
I use a Canon 5D Miii. There are lots of great cameras out there. I love my Canon though.
If you had to choose your top 3 favorite lenses, what would they be? and why?
The basic lenses you need for a wedding are a wide lens, a zoom lens, and a good portrait lens. I also love my Macro lens for an awesome shot of the rings.
What do you love most about being a photographer
I love capturing fleeting, once in a lifetime moments. A photograph is a precise moment that can capture 1/1000 of a second of a person’s life and it can have feeling and meaning in the tiny percentage of a second. I can capture the look when a groom first sees the Bride on their wedding day. I love that.
What has been your greatest challenge in photography?
I think the challenges of Wedding photography is that you have to work with whatever situation you are given- rain or shine, cold or hot, etc and you have to make it great. The challenge of running your own business is making lots of decisions about a lot of different topics, so that can be a big challenge but I am much better at that then when I first started.
What is your favorite type of photography to shoot and why?
I love Weddings, because I love love. It is so cheesy but it is true. I also like problem solving and being creative, and I get to do that a lot on Wedding days.
Where is your favorite place to shoot?
I like shooting at new places. I really want to photograph a wedding at Disney World and in Hawaii, but other than that I just like photographing anything fun, unique, and I also love trees. I’m obsessed with trees, so any place with cool trees.
What type of editing software do you use or prefer?
I use all Adobe products. They are awesome!
What is one advice you would give to aspiring photographers?
Practice, Practice, Practice. Just keep learning and you will get better.
